Delicious Retouching

Seriously, I want a cinnamon roll every time I see this image. With the help of Dolce Bakery, we put this shoot on for a class from the Art Institutes of Kansas City. Several steps went into getting all of the aspects ready for the retouching side of this shoot. We had the heart shaped cinnamon roll suspended from fish hooks in front of a material background. A softbox was above the cinnamon roll, and a black flag was underneath. The third fishing hook you see on the bottom of the cinnamon roll was used to keep the roll parallel to the camera. Then we had to photograph the arrow in three different sections. That’s right. The arrow never went through the cinnamon roll all at once. Alistair took a grinder and chopped the arrow into three parts and they were photographed at different times. Then, the crumbs were photographed falling in mid-air.

Alright, now for the heavy lifting in Photoshop. Everybody stretch. I don’t want you pulling a hamstring.

The first thing I had to do was to separate the cinnamon roll from the background so that I could manipulate the shape without affecting anything else. Then, once I had that done, I could clone out what was left from the fishing line on the bottom of the roll. The delicious looking goo in the middle of the roll had to go, so I masked that off since I had the cinnamon roll on it’s own layer. Then, I got to use a tool that I rarely get to use. I knew of it, but haven’t had much use of it until now. I think I even had to look up a tutorial online to remember how to use it. That tool was….the puppet warp tool! The puppet warp tool has awesome capabilities if you’ve never used it. It was especially useful in this situation. The cinnamon roll had a good general shape of a heart, but I needed to shape it even more. I remembered that there is a heart-shape in the custom shapes tool, so I made a heart shape over the cinnamon roll and reduced the opacity so that I could see how I was shaping the roll. I put my points down and shaped the heart until I was happy with how it looked. Then, I had to put in the arrow pieces. It was a bit tricky due to shading and depth, but I think it turned out quite nice and believable. For the icing being flung out of the “exit wound”, I had to create that from scratch in Photoshop. Using the pen tool and layer styles I tried to imagine how icing would behave if it really were being flung out of a roll. I think it works. Oh, the icing on the arrow was already there. I didn’t create that. Ok, that’s it. I need a cinnamon roll now. I’ve typed it too many times not to have one.

- Adam

I loved working on this shot with Adam and Erin, from Dolce. We chatted with the students from the Arts Institutes about what they wanted to see and the feedback was a studio shoot, with food and plenty of retouching…so we came up with this. The idea is based on a really popular Valentine’s item for Dolce - their double-rolled cinnamon rolls. We brought in a couple dozen rolls to find a hero and went to work.

The final result was definitely a complete collaboration between me, on the camera, and Adam, on the computer. We actually left the set up for twenty-four hours to be sure we had exactly what Adam would need and lucky we did! We ended up coming back for one additional shot utilizing the arrow to get the best shadow detail possible as the arrow entered the roll (the original was just too clean).

My Family and Other Animals

So I managed to make it home to the UK in January and hang out with the family…I must admit I really don’t photograph much in the way of family portraits (a couple of times a year I’ll take photos of my family, or help a friend out). But every time I do it they’re always my absolute favorites. So this year I managed to get an absolute winner of my Mum and Dad - it was just one momentary outtake of my Dad being a classic wally, but it’ll be on my wall for a long time to come.

The little fella is my wonderful nephew - Freddie. He’s quite a character and always great fun to hang out with.

For the purposes of tracking the aging process here’s last years post:

Valentines and Goodbyes

So…it’s been a while since we put something up here…and that’s because I got a little preoccupied. Around about August last year my big dog, fittingly named Bigsby, started fading fast…so I did what any responsible dog owner should do and had a party; “Beers with Bigs”. It was supposed to be his living-wake, so people could come over and celebrate Bigs and have one last cuddle. Apparently either something was in the beer, or Bigs got the hint, and he started perking right back up. He responded to the meds better and to the physio (his spa days at the pool) and got more mobile. It was fun.

And then we started through a huge change in staff; always a bittersweet experience. Bitter because I love the folk that work with me, they’re really nice, and they do a good job, but sweet because they get to go somewhere new and exciting for them and I got to find the next fantastic person to hire in their place, and the journey of work goes on.

And then my dad became ill, really ill. He went in to hospital and phrases like “touch-and-go” were used. And I started looking into plane tickets and making plans to go home…and then he responded to the leeches (or drugs, who knows what the English use in hospital) and he got better.

image

So there I was as I came in to 2013 with healthy'ish dog, fantastic new people working with me and a Dad that was actually up and walking…and then we found this in Bigs’ leg. It’s a huge tumor. The white plate bit is from his TPLO surgeries to replace his ACL (that’s acronym for good stuff) but the cloudy mass is a big mass of bad. So he started getting more three legged.

image

And that’s where I find myself today; at 3pm I get to head to the vets one last time and say goodbye, in a humane, dignified way, to my best friend of the last nine years. I’ll be taking along Baxter (he’s the crazy black lab the mailman found), not in the hopes that they’ll do me a two-for-one deal, but so the other member of my American family can see this and hopefully make a little sense out of it.

In case you haven’t heard the back story I met Bigs from a flyer and I adopted him off my wonderful, beautiful and ultimately ex-wife, not much to say there except I got the dog. When I got him I was a drunken, womanizing, partying fool, all alone in the great USA, and loving life. What changed? Well now I have a dog I had to look after, that helped center me and I would go home to hang out with the dog. What do I get in return, unconditional love, the occasional mess to pick up and a lot of fun. It’s a good trade. It finally helped me to have a family in America.

A lot of people are asking me how I’m doing…it’s a mix of things, sure I’m a little sad, he’s a good dog and a really good friend (doesn’t talk much, but he’s a listener). But I have to admit I’m feeling a little relief; it’s been tricky doing the “hospice-care” and it’s not fun being the decision maker on this. But mostly I’m feeling satisfied. I took a dog that no one wanted and made him my best friend, I took care of him when he needed some dramatic medical care as both his ACL’s failed and that helped him live a great life for several more years, and then when he started to reach his senior years I gave him the care he needed to make that process easier, without subjecting him to extreme levels of care that would have just been confusing for him. So I’m definitely satisfied I’ve done my bit and he’s done his.

So then the next question is am I going to get another dog? Heck yeah, I am. Definitely not today, and maybe not too soon as I need to work with Baxter on this, but I’ll get one and it’ll be a great puppy and another great part of my life. So if you got to the end of this and you want to know what I think, all I’d say is if you don’t have a dog, please go get one - it’ll change you for the better and you’ll never regret it. And there’s a lot of great dogs out there looking to help you out.

image

And, if you got this far, here’s some images of Big’s in his wonderful prime…

PS I just want to say a huge thank you to the folk at Fairway Animal Hospital, Mission MedVet and Woofs for working so hard to make the last while so pleasant and dignified. A huge thank you to the folk at CrossFit Matters - carrying a 95lb dog around ain’t easy. And lastly a huge thank you to the co-workers and friends who help me see the good side of all this. Send Guinness please…

When Weather Won’t Cooperate.

Through rain, clouds, wind, and more rain, professionals stick it out and get it done. This shot for Ply Gem in Virginia happened to be photographed on a rainy day. We managed to sneak in a few angles between the showers, but there was quite a lot to do on the retouching end because of that. In order to make this image look like it was shot on a bright and sunny day, a sky had to be dropped in (obviously). That was a bit of a challenge because of all the leaves overlapping the sky. The color temperature needed to be shifted, the windows had to be colorized, the grass had to be replaced, a new driveway was dropped in, the tree on the left had to be lightened up considerably, and handles on the garage doors were comped in as well. There was a total of about 6-7 hours of retouching in this one shot alone. There are times when mother nature just doesn’t let you get what you want in camera.

I love dawn, and I love photography, and I love beer…you know what makes me really happy…stunning photos taken at dawn…of a brewery.

I’m extremely proud of my adopted home town, and I think Boulevard Brewery is an incredible asset of this incredible town. So we were delighted to capture another photo of the exterior of the brewery recording the new expansion and it’s been wonderful seeing it in use by Boulevard.

Mmmm Pork.

I love working with local companies, and sometimes you don’t realize how incredible some of the local companies are that we have here. So it was an absolute pleasure to hear from Farmland (who we’d been courting for a while) and be given this opportunity to work for them. The shoot was for their brand, spanking new line of DuRoc pork products, that will be sold directly to restaurants. Our task was to style a series of images that would reflect the high-quality style of restaurants that Farmland wanted to target, and to synchronize that with the delicious dishes that Farmland’s in-house team devised.

I love the final result and it’s even more inspiring to see it in use by Farmland in their materials.

Stage 2: Toddler Puppies.

They grew up…and they are definitely cute…still. Aren’t they just the most incredible, beautiful, huggable things. At least I think so. I love the markings and the furry'ness, and did I mention how cute they are. Ok, so they take direction even less now but, who cares?

Yep, I love dogs.

Stage 1: Young Puppies

I love puppies, really love them. I don’t get to work with too many young puppies unfortunately, but this was truly incredible. These husky puppies were only four weeks old  that are absolutely beautiful.

Sure they don’t take direction very well on-set.

But, wow, are they just the epitome of cute?

Be sure to check back in a day or so for Stage 2.

This is one of those top secret things - this project never happened. Yep, we styled a beautiful “black and tan”, we captured a delicious photo, but, unfortunately, for reasons entirely separate from us the client couldn’t run the final program.

But I still wanted you to see a delicious pint of beer and beer. Yum.

Legos and Fish…What Could Be Better?

Another wonderful new addition to Kansas City is this project - a collaboration between ZGF Architects and our long-standing, and wonderful, client, Burns & McDonnell. It’s a beautiful insertion, into a much loved civic space at Crown Center, and Kansas City’s response has been incredible. Thousands of people have been visiting the Lego Land and Sea Life exhibits and it’s a great addition to our offerings to visitors.

Science City has an incredible educational facility, called the Engineerium that was designed by Burns & McDonnell. Shatto rocks! And then you add Dolce Baking Company to Shatto and I guess you get rocks squared - so there are these fabulous new Ice Cream Sammiches that have been on the market for a little while…and apparently are fully addictive. They taste delicious and as always we worked with SHS to get photographs of their latest packaging design for Shatto. Here are the results.

Fun with Fireworks!

Adam and I were looking for a fun way to celebrate the 4th of July, so we decided to set off some large smoke bombs and fire of some sprinklers…luckily we only set the backdrop on fire once.

Also, Adam really can cross his eyes like that…the things we learn at work.

Science Is Cool….To Photograph.

One of the best features of Union Station’s Science City Exhibit is the new Science on a Sphere…again one of our fantastic clients, Burns & McDonnell, designed this project. It’s absolutely breathtaking. The operator can literally show all kinds of incredible scientific facts on a sphere using a series of projectors that display images directly on to the globe. We even got to take it for a spin - seriously, this thing is wonderful.
