We’ve been photographing for SHS for Shatto for a long time now, probably five years, and we had a new opportunity to capture their series of limited edition themed bottles. These are the first two - one for Valentine’s Day and one for St Patrick’s Day. Needless to say the milk was delicious and it was lots of fun working with SHS, as always. We went with a little harsher lighting set-up than we normally do with Shatto and I loved the punch on the final images.

This is a project shot we’ve been playing for a while - just trying to get that perfect outline on the edge of the bottle, then that perfect sharp line reflection that shows the shape of the bottle, the soft fill for the label and then the back-lit glow from the wine itself. I loved this particular bottle design and it happened to be down at the local supermarket - no doubt we recycled the contents on the front porch too. The horizon line was part of the lighting design - where we just raised the flag enough that some light crept through and then lifted the bottle up a half inch - as you can see from the reflection we did actually raise the bottle - no photoshop in creating the line, just in taking the block out. I loved the final shot and I was really happy when it was a winner in this years local ADDY competition.

Stage 1: Young Puppies

I love puppies, really love them. I don’t get to work with too many young puppies unfortunately, but this was truly incredible. These husky puppies were only four weeks old  that are absolutely beautiful.

Sure they don’t take direction very well on-set.

But, wow, are they just the epitome of cute?

Everyone Screams For This Ice Cream…and Cookies. 

Shatto rocks! And then you add Dolce Baking Company to Shatto and I guess you get rocks squared - so there are these fabulous new Ice Cream Sammiches that have been on the market for a little while…and apparently are fully addictive. They taste delicious and as always we worked with SHS to get photographs of their latest packaging design for Shatto. Here are the results.

Fun with Fireworks!

Adam and I were looking for a fun way to celebrate the 4th of July, so we decided to set off some large smoke bombs and fire of some sprinklers…luckily we only set the backdrop on fire once. 

Also, Adam really can cross his eyes like that…the things we learn at work.

Beer…yummy. Here’s some shots we took in studio recently for fun. I love the look of the Guinness surge and we worked really precisely to get the lighting where we wanted - lots of shape on the glass and then a little spray to style the glasses for a final touch.

Sometimes Photography is Yummy.

I can remember the day I heard that Shatto Milk Company was launching a line of ice cream sandwiches. I knew they were going to be marvelous and I fully enjoyed being a part of this tasty debut. The sandwich packaging was shot on white seamless, so all that was required on the background was a bit of cleanup and some level boosting. The shadow from the packaging gave the sandwich some dimension, so it was left in. Some of the packages needed to have the creases taken out or reduced, so there were compositions used for that task. Some careful manipulation was used to align the packaging comps that didn’t line up perfectly. Yay liquify tool!

The shot of the ice cream package in between the two cookies was a result of combining three images. The cookie wasn’t large enough to cover the whole top of the package, so I blended all three positions of the cookie to create one big one. It wasn’t too hard because the texture and color of the cookie was fairly easy to blend. The last thing to remove was the reflection coming off of the plexiglass. It was easy since the ice cream and cookies were shot on white. Simple and sweet!

Shatto means tasty.

I’ve been working for a few years with the wonderful people at Shatto and SHS and have loved seeing the packaging design/packaging advertising evolve in new and exciting ways. So, here’s the latest products (which I think you can already find in your neighborhood grocery stores). A new ice cream flavor with new ice cream packaging and three new butter flavors with radically new packaging. This stuff not only looks great, but it tastes delicious!

Art Director + Photographer = Something of Beauty

We were back in the studio and having some fun working on a concept shoot with Shaun Crockett, of AdFarm. It was a pretty cool shoot that we have been working on for a very long time. We actually pre-lit the scene in late December and only just had a chance to return to it and give the shoot the time it really deserved. 

As you can see Baxter was in his usual spot - right behind the action and making sure we were safe. In the meantime we were working with some very tricky subjects - a very reflective stainless steel dish and some very shiny objects in them. It was great fun focusing some precise lighting and highlights to give us a beautiful final shot; which we’ll be showing you very soon.

Fruit & Light.

One of the big advantages of having a bloody huge studio is that I get to play around sometimes. I’m really enjoying working with some reflections and translucency recently - so here’s a couple of quick shots from a very relaxing afternoon. Enjoy.
